Of Cancer & Community: Win Mark Blevis’s audio brain

Saturday, May 2, 2009.

Author and librarian Bridget Zinn had an eventful February.  She found an agent for her YA novel, she got married and she was diagnosed with stage four cancer. Mark met Bridget at the second annual KidLit Conference last fall. We were shocked and saddened by her bad news.

Hospital bills are high and health insurance doesn’t cover everything. That’s what inspired Jone MacCulloch to organize a fundraising auction for Bridget.

We’re participating in the auction by offering audio production and creative direction services for a single ten-minute audio production.  Depending on the type of work Mark does with the winner, the value will range between $450 and $1000.  Bidding begins at $100.  To read the details of our auction item or to make a bid, follow this link and leave a comment.

Saturday, April 4, 2009.

Thank you very much to Helen Murray, a University student in Ireland, for creating an incredible poster to promote our Rock Stars of Reading series.  Helen and Mark connected on Twitter and Helen offered to create the poster for us on her own time!

Thanks also to Carlina, a professional photographer in South Texas, for allowing us to use her fantastic photograph, Search, which Helen found on Carlina’s Flickr account.

Join our newsletter for exclusive video outtakes

Tuesday, February 17, 2009.

Mark’s been hard at work editing 13 hours of video into a series of 15-minute video episodes that document our 6 days with the Rock Stars of Reading this past November. Sadly, maintaining flow and focus in each video means lots of great footage on the cutting room floor.

Members of our free email newsletter are in for a treat. We will be making some of the video outtakes available in our February issue.

Sign up to our email newsletter now so you don’t miss out on this great footage.

Bolstered by Zorgamazoo: An unusual post

Thursday, February 12, 2009.

ZorgamazooToday was a tough day.

But spending the evening reading aloud Zorgamazoo, Robert Paul Weston‘s incredibly uplifting, completely rhyming adventure novel, has actually whisked me away from the torment of reality.

So I’m stepping briefly out of our Just One More Book! grid to share with you a much-needed rallying cry from the reluctant (furry) hero of this fabulously sweet and exciting adventure:

“Now, sometimes you lose and sometimes you win,
but my Pop always told me: You never give in!
And if he were here now, I know what he’d say:
Morty, my son, when you’re caught in a fray,

or your travels are tough and the going is rough,
or you’re up to your neck in the slippery stuff,
or say some old robots are on the attack,
then I tell you, my son: You start fighting back!”

I’m not fighting back, literally, but I am bolstered. So Thank you, Morty. And thanks to Robert Paul Weston for this great rhyming ride.
