Beyond the Book: Can a creator’s background boost your enjoyment?

Saturday, April 4, 2009.

Today on Just One More Book!!, we break from our standard format to discuss connection with a book’s creator and how it impacts our enjoyment of a book.

Are you swayed by background of or connection with a book’s creator (geographically, culturally,..)? If so, does this in turn impact your young listeners’ enjoyment of a book?

Authors, illustrators and books mentioned

Pictured, Love and Roast Chicken, which we enjoy with more bittersweet fondness knowing the spunky, adventurous spirit of author, Barbara Knutson, and that she passed away so young, so suddenly after this book was published.

Since I write I tend to have immense respect for my favorite authors. Far too many times I’ve become interested in who the author really is, how do they write, how do they get their ideas, only to not like the answers and loose a bit of that respect. People are only human after all…

Usually I look up info about an author or illustrator because I liked their book(s). Knowing something about the author/illustrator doesn’t necessarily make me feel different about the book, but adds another dimension to the book experience. Sometimes (mostly in regard to adult literature) I find out something negative about an author and it makes me less enamoured with their work or less inclined to pick up another of their books.
